Spoons: A Family Story of Enduring Loss

by J. Corn

Children’s, Self-Help, Grief, Loss, Illustrated

Spoons is a sweet story about enduring loss and finding hope. At some point, every family will face the loss of a loved one, and the Spoon family is no different. Children and adults can find comfort from the lessons in this book and apply them to their own family stories.

Julie’s Review:

Spoons is a sweet book helping introduce loss to kids and sharing ways to cope.
The illustrations were lovely and colors so vivid. You can’t help but just love the Spoon family.
The book is a short read for kids, with sentences alternating in color, as colors play a big role in the story and illustrations.
One comment I had was it seemed there illustrations and text could have been better aligned. For example we might have two pages of just text and two pages of just illustrations. Perhaps more alternating so the photos line up with text would have been better.
I did like though how it appeared the illustrations went together with current and past events lining up. One of Mommy Spoon’s memories with Grandma Spoon, and a parallel illustration with the kids getting to participate in the same activities.

About the Author

Throughout her life, J. Corn has dealt with grief: first losing her mom at a young age, then her husband leaving her a single mother of two, and most recently her father. The grieving process has taught her the importance of talking about your loved one after they’re gone. No one should suffer alone or in silence. Corn hopes that SPOONS will encourage families to share stories about their loved ones, even when it’s difficult. She and her children are active members of their community grief counseling center.
SPOONS is Corn’s debut book.
