We’re chatting about covers on Chapter Break. ‘Cause you know we all judge books by covers, whether we admit it or not. We judge the style, the color and font choices, and just the overall look. That might not keep us from reading the book, but we do still judge.

Wowza what a train wreck. This looks like a children’s board book of nightmares! How creepy is the zombie bunny, but also, hilarious. Hilariously terrible. I don’t know if this is a sarcastic book or a true attempt at a gothic rendition of a kids book.

So I do like how it does a good job parodying a kids board book – you know I love a good parody. But it has to be well done. The bunny on the cover looks scary, not quite the cool gothic styles I like. But that butterfly is pretty cool. Actually I really kinda like it. The flowers and grass and simple illustrations fit the board book parody as well.

I’m not fond of the changing colors in the title font – it really hurts readability. And kind of reminds me of the Geocities websites we built in the 00s.

But it’s cool that the author is also the illustrator.

I kinda want to read it because of how insane it looks. So I went to read the blurb and some reviews, and it turns out this book might actually have some substance and a life lesson. Hmm.

Oh – I also like the description hilariously terrible. I don’t know that I’d let a kid read this book. But I would check it out given the opportunity.

I also think the parody works. I’m sure a real butterfly doesn’t have a skeleton like that. But it’s great for the design. In a weird way, I think the bunny is cute. Not in an I want to cuddle up with it cute. But in a clever zombie cute way.

I also don’t really love the color changing title. The font is whimsical, though, and fits the kid’s book vibe.

This cover did it’s job. Grabbed our attention and left us curious enough to check out the book.
