For this discussion post, we are joining the Tell Me Something Tuesday challenge run by Jen at That’s What I’m Talking About. Here’s the topic for this week.
Paper, electronic, audio… How do you read? Has it changed in recent years?
Julie:
I will read in any way I can, but there are formats I am more drawn to these days.
When I first started becoming a book dragon, it was all about the print books as trophies on my shelf. I love having my library. I have collected so many books that I haven’t read. Which is a challenge every time we move around but I told my husband I am getting rid of my books when he gets rid of his personal pew pew collection. So, never.
I got a Kindle, but falling in love with ebooks as my first choice isn’t happening. I love their convenience for travel purposes, but it still doesn’t feel the same as putting a trophy on my shelf. However, it is wonderful for reading in bed. It already has a light, is lightweight, and is easy to hide under the covers so as not to disturb the husband. So it’s got its times and places for sure.
Then I had my kid and reading became challenging so the only reading I did was audiobooks on my commute. This has remained my number one top best favorite way to read. Because multitasking is my queendom.
Lynn:
I get everything Julie said about physical books and having a kindle and audio books. I have BOXES of books I haven’t unpacked after moving them multiple times. It’s too much to get rid of them. But also too much to unpack them.
I also have a Kindle. And read on the app on my phone. I did switch from my phone specifically to the Kindle for less phone distractions. I somewhat miss sitting and reading – even with an ebook. But I don’t seem to be able to sit still and concentrate long enough to read anything (thanks to all the other distractions available). I find, though, that this is story-dependent. The last book I sat and read took me 6 weeks to finish. I was not motivated by the story. But then I picked up a book yesterday and I’m already at 50%. Clearly, I’m much more interested in this book!
Audio books continue to be my main reading source. (And don’t let anyone tell you audio books aren’t reading!) I listen while working out, commuting, cleaning. Audio books are the best of both worlds. They allow me to experience books while also still being productive.
What about you?

I am building some shelves in my (soon to be) office and I will FINALLY have a place to put my books. So I’ve recently started purchasing physically books again.
I prefer physical books, because like you say, it is a trophy on my shelf! But I do also like to read on my Kindle because I can read while I eat since I live alone and don’t have to be holding a book, can just prop it up and tap it to turn the page, lol. And I love audiobooks for the car.

What’s living alone like? LOL I have never lived alone!
I am primarily a physical book reader as well! Here is my TMST post: https://bibliophilebree.blogspot.com/2025/06/tell-me-something-tuesday-how-do-you.html
