WOW! WOMEN ON WRITING TOUR OF
Grandma Yogini by Raven Howell
Grandma Yogini
by Raven Howell
Book Summary
Henry and his sister, Meredith can hardly wait for Grandma to arrive for a visit. But what should they expect? Among the children’s diverse friends and their grandmothers who bake, create art, and speak Spanish, will Grandma be able to share something unique and fun with the kids?
Henry’s fears are alleviated when, not long after arrival, they flutter like butterflies, slither like snakes, and enjoy other challenges of stretching their muscles and calming their minds. This is no run-of-the-mill grandma, and when it’s time for goodbye, the kids know this was the BEST grandma visit ever.

Julie’s Review:
I loved how the book starts with the kids being so excited about their grandmother’s visit, and imagining what they will do together like their friends do when their grandmothers visit. I especially liked how the memories of these visits show the grandmothers spend time with all the neighborhood friends, not just visiting with their own families. It was such a sweet way to start the book, showing how important grandmothers are to all the kids and their friends.
The grandma in this story teaches all the kids about yoga, showing them fun poses the kids can do, acting as if they are a variety of animals. It’s a sweet and wholesome book. The illustrations were bright and fun as well. I enjoyed how vivid and colorful the artwork was.

From Kids to Grandparents, How Yoga Benefits us
By Raven Howell
Seniors may struggle with issues related to balance or coordination. Middle agers wonder how to physically maintain mobility while also calming their minds. Teenagers wish to build physical strength and also reduce social stress. Parents of toddlers want to instill healthy exercise routines for their little ones. And ultimately, most of us wish for a better, deeper, more restful sleep at night. From a 2024 survey, 78% of Americans were actively seeking to improve their dreamtime.
Yoga offers an incredibly wide range of both physical and mental advantages for all age groups. Developed thousands of years ago, yoga is a practice involving body, breath and mind. The blend of physical movement and meditative awareness serves as a spiritual practice to improve overall health.
The practice has been found to improve the duration as well as the quality of sleep, from the littlest ones to elders. Combining exercise with relaxation, we snooze deeper and longer.
When children practice yoga, they explore and improve flexibility, and increase mental focus. There are less emotional outbursts and more self-awareness. Middle graders and young adults find it’s a great way to manage peer pressure and stay active while cultivating a sense of inner peace. Yoga is also a great compliment to a competitive team sport by providing greater access to mental clarity and increasing range of joint mobility and motion.
Once the body slips into middle age, practicing yoga helps in maintaining posture and core muscle strength. And many find exceptional relief from back pain and symptoms caused by arthritis.
Because of yoga’s adaptable nature, it can be modified to suite various needs and fitness levels. For instance, seniors acquire invaluable comfort in “chair yoga”, for those with limited mobility or recovering from surgery. Even this gentler format improves blood circulation and heart health -good news for those who are trying to lower their blood pressure.
As a children’s author, I’m having a blast vising preschoolers and elementary aged students with my new book, GRANDMA YOGINI. We stretch like cats, stand tall and sway like trees, and hop like kangaroos before I begin story time. The children always become more attentive and focused.
Last week, I visited my 92-year-old mother. In mid-sentence, she broke out into yogic leg stretches! I cracked up! She keeps to her routine of weekly yoga/Tai Chi classes, calling it her “happy place”.
