Chat About Covers: Pirates: Dead Men’s Tales

 

We’re chatting about covers on Chapter Break. ‘Cause you know we all judge books by covers, whether we admit it or not. We judge the style, the color and font choices, and just the overall look. That might not keep us from reading the book, but we do still judge.

 

What a fun cover! Why are we all obsessed with the octopus creature lately? They are so magnificent and I see designs on clothing popping up everywhere too. I deeply respect this intelligent animal. But anyway, it is a fun addition to any sea/pirate-related book cover!

I love the above and under the ocean split on this cover. And the peeking eyes underneath and tentacles above grabbing the ship. The drawing vs digital feel of the art is a fun change. Nice visuals.

The title font is fun too, I like how it’s not straight across but like on the waves too. I don’t really like the font on the bottom of the book though, it’s kinda small or maybe it’s that the sentence is too wordy.

 

I’ve been a bit obsessed about octopus (octopi???) books after reading REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES (which is awesome. You should read that!). Mostly with any time an octopus outsmarts the humans. And the octopus on this cover is clearly winning. Especially with the cute little eyes at the bottom of the cover!

I dig the hand-drawn vibe. It does evoke those old maps with dangerous creatures and the unknown. The waves and other pirate paraphernalia at the top of the cover balance out the under-water scene at the bottom.

The fonts are easy to read. I really like how INCREDIBLE is in all caps – that makes the whole section on the right stand out.

Overall, a great cover that catches the eye and tells the reader what the book is about.
