Have you checked out our various Features pages lately? Julie and I are all about Features posts. (Who doesn’t need an occasional break from reviews?) It’s THRESING DAY (if you know, you know). We thought we’d discuss What DRAGON Books Taught Us. And no, we don’t mean cooking, crafting, or organizing. We are talking about serious, useful skills. We want to make sure that all of our readers are prepared!
What We Can Learn from Dragons
From fairy tales to epic fantasy, dragons are some of the most fascinating creatures in literature. Sometimes they’re terrifying villains, other times they’re wise mentors, and in books like Fourth Wing, they’re partners and protectors. No matter the story, dragons always have something to teach us about strength, loyalty, and even ourselves.
Here are some of the biggest lessons we can take from dragons:
1. Guard Your Treasure (But Define It First)
Dragons are famous hoarders. Gold, gems, enchanted swords; you name it, they’ll protect it. The lesson? Know what matters most to you (your peace, your time, your people) and guard it fiercely.
2. Power Comes with Presence
Dragons don’t need to roar constantly to command attention. Their very presence does the job. Sometimes confidence is less about what you say and more about how you carry yourself.

3. Rest Is Sacred
Even apex predators nap unapologetically. If dragons can sleep for days in their caves, you can take that afternoon break without guilt.
4. Choose Your Rider (and Your People) Wisely
Dragons don’t bond with just anyone; they’re incredibly selective. It’s a reminder to be intentional about who you let close. True connection is rare and worth protecting.

5. Bonding Is Power
The rider-dragon bond is transformative. When you align with someone or something, such as your passion, you both grow stronger.
6. Your Fire Is Your Strength
Dragons breathe fire without hesitation. For us, that “fire” might be our voice, our creativity, or our ambition. Don’t dim it just because others find it intimidating.
7. Loyalty Runs Deep
Once a dragon bonds, their loyalty is absolute. That kind of trust is rare: value and honor it when you find it.

8. Not All Battles Are Worth Fighting
Some dragons don’t even acknowledge an unworthy challenger; they simply fly away. Sometimes the most powerful move isn’t to fight, but to rise above.
9. Flight Requires Courage
Taking to the skies is freeing but also terrifying. Dragons remind us that growth often means leaving the ground and daring to soar.
10. Sarcasm Is a Love Language
Dragons don’t sugarcoat; sometimes their sharp wit or biting sarcasm is how they show respect (and even affection). It’s a reminder that honesty, humor, and a little banter can strengthen bonds just as much as words of praise.
“One does not live a century without being well aware of the space one takes up.” ― Rebecca Yarros, Fourth Wing
Final Thoughts
Dragons may not exist in our world (at least as far as we know 🐉), but the lessons they leave behind in stories are real and lasting. Whether it’s protecting what’s important, trusting the right people, or unapologetically owning our power, dragons remind us to live boldly.
So the next time you pick up a fantasy book (like Fourth Wing), pay attention to the dragons. They might just be teaching you something about how to face your own battles, guard your own treasures, and light your own fire.
