Guest Review:
Ellie, The Little Chick Series has been one of the more interactive and educational entries that my toddler and I enjoyed together. In this book 7, Ellie is off on a bright and playful journey to Penguin Island, and the entire adventure revolves around counting. So I think it’s a perfect read for developing early numerical skills in a fun and engaging way.
What stood out to me is how the story invites my child to participate. As Ellie follows a path marked by numbered buoys, readers are encouraged to count along. It’s not just a story we read to our child. It’s something we do together.
This interaction gives a natural and enjoyable way for kids to practice counting from 1 to 10 without it feeling like a drill or lesson.
The book also reinforces number sequencing and one-to-one correspondence (counting objects one by one, in order), which are foundational skills for early math. This emotional reassurance is just as important as the academic takeaway, especially at this age.
And because Ellie gets a little too excited and mixes up some numbers, it opens the door to a gentle message: it’s okay to make mistakes, and it’s okay to ask for help.
The writing is simple, rhythmic, and encourages repetition, which helps reinforce learning. The colorful illustrations are also well done, as usual, clear and appealing without being overwhelming. There’s enough detail to keep children curious, but the focus stays on the counting elements. From boats and fish to penguins and buoys, there’s always something to point out, talk about, and count.
What I really appreciate is how this book does more than teach numbers. It also builds attention span, encourages active listening, and boosts confidence as children realize they can help guide Ellie through her journey. It’s a story about numbers, yes, but also about teamwork, problem-solving, and staying calm when things get a little confusing.
Let’s Count, Ellie is a charming and useful addition to our bookshelf. That one book that turns learning into a shared adventure. If you’re looking for a way to help your toddler build early math skills in a relaxed, story-driven setting, this book is a great pick.
