Julie Review Avatar Julie’s Review:

Thank you for the opportunity to experience the beauty that is this book. Can we just take a moment to admire the gorgeous art? Wow how adorable are these illustrations.

And second, what kid (or adult!) isn’t obsessed with dragons? So this book is just such a great choice to read and enjoy together.

The story is about a sweet and helpful dragon who does so much good for his community, but is seeking a best friend. (And here’s where it hits home to me because we move so much I’m always having to make new friends as an adult, and the kiddo has to make new friends at school.)

It’s such a sweet and cute story about finding someone in need and becoming friends because of a shared experience. It’s endearing and uplifting, and you can’t help but smile reading this adorable story and seeing these beautiful illustrations.

Writing for Children Without Talking Down to Them
By Ellie Moss

There’s a quiet assumption in children’s publishing that stories need to be loud to compete. Big stakes. Big personalities. Bright colors. Fast pacing. I’ve come to believe something different.

A children’s book doesn’t need to shout to be heard.

When I wrote Dibs the Dragon and the Marshmallow Rescue, I wasn’t trying to create the biggest dragon or the most explosive adventure. I wanted something gentle — a story that trusted children to lean in rather than be grabbed.

Kids are perceptive. They don’t need everything turned up to eleven to stay engaged. A lot of them actually crave rhythm, softness, room to think. When you lower the volume, you make space for them to participate — to notice things, repeat phrases, sit with a feeling for a moment.

Writing without talking down to children starts with respect. It means choosing clarity over oversimplification, language that’s musical without being condescending, pacing that lets a story breathe instead of racing toward the next spectacle.

In Dibs’ world, problems aren’t solved with force. There’s no villain, no dramatic showdown. The tension is small and recognizable. That’s on purpose.

Childhood isn’t only made up of high-stakes moments. It’s figuring things out as you go, wanting a friend, helping someone who’s stuck. Those experiences deserve stories that match their scale — and take them seriously.

When we write for children as thoughtful people instead of distracted audiences waiting to be dazzled, we create room for real connection. A quieter story isn’t a weaker one. It just means you trust the reader.

Sometimes the most powerful thing a story can do is whisper.

About the Author

Ellie Moss is the creator of Lickitypop, an imaginative, candy-colored universe where jellybean forests shimmer, bubble scooters zoom through cotton-candy skies, and problems are solved with courage, connection, and a sticky SPLAT.

What began as an escape during a difficult chapter in her life quickly grew into a world that helped her find softness, hope, and joy again.
Her stories blend whimsy with emotional care: pastel illustrations designed for calm, playful sound words that encourage speech development, and gentle characters who model resilience, kindness, and friendship.

Ellie believes deeply that stories can be a form of healing for little readers discovering the world, and for grown-ups rediscovering their breath. Through Lickitypop, she invites families to step into a place where imagination is soothing, feelings are welcome, and magic is something we all deserve.
