Guest Review:
As a parent who’s been following the Ellie the Chick series with my 4-year-old, this fourth book, Ellie, The Treasure Hunter, felt like a natural next step in our reading journey by blending curiosity, learning, and gentle adventure in a way that’s perfect for preschoolers.
The story centers around Ellie and her best friend Lola the bunny, who receive a special map from Ellie’s mom that leads them on a shape scavenger hunt around their house.
What begins as a simple shape hunt soon turns into something even more meaningful: each shape they find also hides a letter, and the letters spell out something special by the end. It’s a clever and age-appropriate way to introduce both early geometry and letter recognition without making it feel like a lesson.
The pacing of the story is just right for young readers, calm but engaging. Each page focuses on one area of the house, which helps break the story into manageable segments and gives children space to observe the illustrations and guess the shapes along with Ellie and Lola. This makes the book feel interactive without being overwhelming.
The wording is straightforward, warm, and accessible. There’s a rhythmic quality to the sentences that makes it easy to read aloud, and the vocabulary is thoughtfully chosen to be understandable yet still offer a few new words for toddlers to learn.
As a parent, I really appreciate that the tone is encouraging and positive throughout. There are no “wrong answers” or frustrating moments, just gentle guidance and joyful discovery.
The illustrations are another strong point. They’re colorful, clean, and expressive to support the text without clutter. Each room they visit is full of soft details that are familiar to kids: blankets, clocks, tiles, cushions.
It invites children to notice the world around them, and after we finished reading, my child immediately looked around the room and pointed out some shapes, which turned into a fun activity in itself.
What I love most is how the book encourages observation and curiosity while reinforcing basic concepts like shape recognition, letter identification, and even teamwork and problem-solving.
The friendship between Ellie and Lola is sweet and supportive, modeling cooperation and shared excitement.
Ellie, the Treasure Hunter is both fun and educational. I think this book provides a great example of how a simple story can inspire real-world learning. It’s a wonderful pick for children aged 3 to 5, especially those just starting to explore letters and shapes.
I’d happily recommend it to other parents looking for picture books that are not only enjoyable but also contribute meaningfully to early development.

Sounds like a really cute story, and one great to maybe get kids doing something during the summer that won’t cost any money? Thanks for sharing!
