Review
"Fabulously readable and thoroughly engaging, it is Cole's voice that makes her stories sing. Whether she's leading us into laughter or holding our hand through dazzling moments of emotional recognition, Cole takes writing seriously while taking herself lightly, and thereby illuminating the world with these brief, memorable essays."--Gina Barreca, author of They Used to Call Me Snow White . . . But I Drifted: Women's Strategic Use of Humor
"Full of wit, honesty, and hilarious tangents, Joni's writing makes me feel like I'm sitting in a cozy corner of a coffee shop listening to my funniest friend spill her guts. Party Like It's 2044 had me laughing and gasping--'I can't believe you just said that!'--and had everyone else in the coffee shop wondering, Why is that girl in the corner laughing and talking to herself?"--Kristen Mulrooney, coauthor of Gilmore Girls: The Official Cookbook
"Cole writes what so many of us are secretly thinking, from the insecurity to the snark. With keen observation and irresistible wit, she is the Seinfeld of single authors of a certain age."--Leslie Lehr, author of A Boob's Life: How America's Obsession Shaped Me . . . and You

About the author
JONI B. COLE is a writing instructor and author of seven books, including the essay collection Party Like It's 2044, described by scholar and humorist Gina Barreca as, “Fabulously readable and thoroughly engaging, it is Cole’s voice that makes her stories sing. Whether she’s leading us into laughter, or holding our hand through dazzling moments of emotional recognition, Cole takes writing seriously while taking herself lightly, and thereby illuminating the world with these memorable essays.”
Joni also has authored two books for writers: Good Naked: How to Write More, Write Better, and Be Happier (listed as one of the "Best Books for Writers" by Poets & Writers magazine); and Toxic Feedback: Helping Writers Survive and Thrive (“strongly recommended” for students and teachers by Library Journal).
Nominated for a US Fellowship Award and Pushcart Prize, she created the three-volume “This Day” series that shares a day in the life of hundreds of women across America (“fascinating and eye-opening,” Publisher's Weekly). For twenty-five years, Joni has taught online and in-person creative writing to adults through her own Writer's Center in White River Junction, Vermont, as well as at academic programs and conferences around the country. She lives in Vermont and has two daughters.

I met Joni Cole in 2012, when I spent 8 months living in Vermont for a temporary nurse practitioner job. I saw an ad for a Friday night drop-in group called “Prompt and Pino,” which was being offered at a Writer’s Center in the nearby town of White River Junction. Joni ran the center and led that group, which changed the course of my stint in Vermont and rejuvenated my writing life. I attended as many Prompt evenings as she offered, as well as other workshops at the center. We also had fun socializing a few times at restaurants and her home.
Since then, other than an occasional Facebook sighting, Joni and I haven’t kept in touch much, with both of us wandering on into our busy lives. I was thrilled to find out about her newest book. Reading her essays was an amusing and engaging way to catch up with an old friend. I suspect that even if I didn’t know Joni personally, I would feel this way about her essays.
Joni kept me both giggling and reflecting as I read through her quirky musings about possibly donating a kidney to someone she doesn’t like; getting so lost with GPS that she just goes home; her feeling burdened by white privilege and a perceived mandate to single-handedly end racism; her quest for the perfect bathrobe; her proclivity to escape from the horrors of the news into animal cuteness; her loving relationships with her ex-husband, boyfriend, daughters, and cat; her imagined life-threatening health problems; her fear and loathing of taxes; and numerous other important and trivial topics.
Joni’s self-deprecating humor and fumbles, intertwined with her inspiring bursts of confidence, resonated with me, as well as with my cat, who was reading over my shoulder. “I think her cat must have written that part,” she chirped a few times. Mostly though, the book made me miss Joni. But now I’m all caught up. This is great, because I’m lazy and anti-social these days, my writing has been mostly dormant, and it never occurred to me to check out her on-line writing workshops. Since I miss Joni’s intelligent, witty, and amiable personality though, maybe it’s time to crank up Zoom.
I would read several stories, then find myself starting over and going back through, underlining quotes, aha moments, perfect metaphors, language ... you can easily fly through these stories. But, trust me, read them a second time so you don't miss the brilliant literary genius in the thoughtfully chosen words. The writing is concise, yet descriptive, and the pacing from story to story is fantastic! I look forward to her next book!
