Isda does not exist. At least not beyond the opulent walls of the opera house.
Cast into a well at birth for being one of the magical few who can manipulate memories when people sing, she was saved by Cyril, the opera house’s owner. Since that day, he has given her sanctuary from the murderous world outside. All he asks in return is that she use her power to keep ticket sales high—and that she stay out of sight. For if anyone discovers she survived, Isda and Cyril would pay with their lives.
But Isda breaks Cyril’s cardinal rule when she meets Emeric Rodin, a charming boy who throws her quiet, solitary life out of balance. His voice is unlike any she’s ever heard, but the real shock comes when she finds in his memories hints of a way to finally break free of her gilded prison.
Haunted by this possibility, Isda spends more and more time with Emeric, searching for answers in his music and his past. But the price of freedom is steeper than Isda could ever know. For even as she struggles with her growing feelings for Emeric, she learns that in order to take charge of her own destiny, she must become the monster the world tried to drown in the first place.

About the author
Jessica S. Olson claims New Hampshire as her home, but has somehow found herself in Texas, where she spends most of her time singing praises to the inventor of the air conditioner. When she's not hiding from the heat, she's corralling her four wild—but adorable—children, dreaming up stories about kissing and murder and magic, and eating peanut butter by the spoonful straight from the jar. She earned a bachelor’s in English with minors in editing and French. She is the author of Sing Me Forgotten and A Forgery of Roses.

If I could describe this book to anybody, I would say it's HBO's "The Nevers" mixed with "Phantom of the Opera" and I was in love. The author's writing style is magnificent, and some of the quotes in this story resonate with anybody who looks at themselves in the mirror and finds errors. Isda is a super relatable character, and I love the reverse grumpy-sunshine trope in this novel! Isda is very much the grump, while our male love interest Emeric is all the sunshine in the world.
Literally obsessed with this book, and I'll forever read Jessica S. Olson books!
But devastating. I haven’t read a book this devastatingly beautiful in a while. Forbidden lovers, mysterious and dangerous magic, and ever-looming temptation mark these pages. What a whirlwind!
I’m still grappling with the ending, just to make up my mind about it but I am so conflicted! I don’t want to spoil anything, but I desperately need my friends to read this one so we can discuss and cry together 😂
There were a few little flaws, like the love interest Emeric not seeming masculine enough to be realistic, and the prose seems a little too dramatic at times, but these didn’t affect my enjoyment of the book very much.
The character building and the crafting of the story really pulls you in and makes you feel like your part of the story. Especially Isda and Emeric. I was so rooting for them throughout this story. It also forces you to take a look at society and the way it treated the fendoir and gravoir. My heart broke for Isda, having to live her life like she did, always through others memories. There were times you wondered if she was really the villain everyone made her and other gravoirs out to be. By the ending my heart was in pieces for Isda.
This is an incredible story that deserves to be read and reread several times. In my heart I don’t think 5 stars does it enough justice. If I could I would rate this 10 stars in a heart beat. I look forward to more stories from this author. Lastly, I will say I cannot recommend this story enough
first-person POV (Isda)
standalone
fantasy / historical / romance
Set in an alternate France-like country in maybe the 1880's. Isda is a gravoir, a girl born with a disfigured face (making them easy to identify) and the ability to manipulate people's memories when they sing. After a trio of gravoirs took over the country and were only overthrown by a rebellion, all gravoirs are required to be "disposed of" at birth. Isda is thrown into a well as a newborn but rescued by Cyril Bardin, the owner of the Opera House, who hides her and cares for her and trains her. Now 18, Isda hides in the wings during performances and manipulates the attendee's memories so they love the performance, ensuring Cyril's income. Isda always wears black with a black mask and lives in the catacombs below the Opera House because that is where her organ fits. She longs to see the outside world - she has always lived in the shadows in the Opera House.
One night a young man with an outstanding voice, Emeric, auditions for a role as tenor but is only allowed to be the janitor because he has no formal training. Isda hears him and volunteers to train him - she is desperate to search more thoroughly through his memories because he has a younger sister who is a gravoir!
She and Emeric become close but have a spat when Emeric warns her that Cyril is not what he seems. Cyril has Isda manipulate the memories of the Council Chief, driving him mad, so Cyril can step into the role. Then Cyril throws a masquerade to celebrate but forbids Isda to attend. Emeric tries to stop her but Isda shows up, dressed in white this time. The crazed former Council Chief shows up and accidentally unmasks Isda during his rant. The crowd freaks out and Emeric saves Isda, taking her to his attic apartment, where they proclaim their love. But Cyril finds them and imprisons them. Isda is to be executed in the morning but first she must drain Emeric of all his memories save the bare minimum he needs to perform.
Isda escapes, finds Emeric's sister (who has been imprisoned by Cyril), gets Emeric the elixir with all his memories, and tears down the Opera House. At the end she removes all of Emeric's memories that involve her, even though he begs to go with her.
It's a gender-shifted Phantom of the Opera, with a little magic thrown in and more tragic romance. Isda has been searching for the mysterious catalyseur to enhance her powers - she thought it was the pendant Emeric gave her but it turns out it was Emeric himself (Like Mal with Alina in Leigh Bardugo's Grishaverse). I skimmed the last third, but should appeal to the target audience.
