Julia London is one of the authors who has a place of honor on my Treasure List. This best-selling, highly talented author grabs the reader and transports them into a different world. Writing one sitting read and reread permanent keeper shelf books, the story unfolds through mind images creating the opportunity for the reader to feel like they become part of the time, place, and people. These characters are full of passionate sparks, tempers igniting, danger, humor, and excitement. The story flows perfectly from beginning to end. Devil in Tartan takes a different spin in some areas, which only makes it more exciting. This is a perfectly executed, sexy, hot romance that leaves you wanting more of Julia London.

The heroine, Lottie Livingstone, bears the responsibility of her clan. She and her clan set out, via the sea, to sell a shipload of illegal whiskey. When an attack leaves them vulnerable, she transforms from a maiden daughter to a clever warrior. For survival, she orchestrates the siege of a rival’s ship and now holds the devilish Scottish captain Aulay Mackenzie under her command.

Tied, captive and forced to watch a stunning siren commandeer the Mackenzie ship, Aulay burns with the desire to seize control—of the ship and Lottie. He has resigned himself to a life of solitude on the open seas, but her beauty tantalizes him like nothing has before. As authorities and enemies close in, he is torn between surrendering her to justice and defending her from assailants. He’ll lose her forever, unless he’s willing to sacrifice the unimaginable…

I highly recommend Devil in Tartan, book 4 of the Highland Groom series. Although the previous books are keeper shelf material as well, you can read this one as a stand-a-lone, or in order of the series. You will find yourself marking the calendar for future books and release dates from Julia London. Anyone who enjoys historical romance will auto-grab romances written by this superb author.

“She thought of the way he looked at her as if he meant to put her on a spit and roast her. Was it a sign of depravity that she wanted to be roasted by him?”

Let’s just cut to the quick here. If you are a fan of the Highland/Scotland romance genre, you will be entertained by Julia London’s Devil in Tartan.

There’s nothing quite like a brooding, misunderstood Scotsman discovering his reason for existence happens to be the ditzy blonde lassie who just pirated his ship.

Captain Aulay Mackenzie spends quite a bit of this story trying to wrap his head around the mindset of the lovely Lottie Livingstone, and he’s not alone. It’s bad enough that Auley is suffering the ignored, middle-child syndrome, but having his ship commandeered by a woman best described by this reader as a bit of Lucy Ricardo mixed in with Phoebe Buffay and, well, you just kinda feel for poor Auley … .

Devil in Tartan is book four in author Julia London’s Highland Groom series, but you do not have to be familiar with the series to enjoy this read. Devil in Tartan was my introduction to the series, and after an initial bumpy chapter or two, I found myself enjoying Lottie’s nonsensical behavior, right along with Auley. The romance between these two heats up rapidly and does not disappoint.

It’s apparent that author London enjoys this genre—the writing flows and the attention to historical details, along with the constancy of dialect, reflect her mastery of the genre.

The plot itself is a bit far-fetched (the behavior of both protagonists had me scratching my head at times), and contains more action than angst as a good part of the story takes place on the seas, but overall the romance between Lottie and Auley won me over.

Kudos and four stars to Julia London for Devil in Tartan.

This is Aulay MacKenzie’s HEA that doesn’t start out that way. Aulay is the sea captain of his family, now down to one ship. Not long after leaving port for Amsterdam, he comes across a sinking ship and rescues the survivors and some of their cargo. Who then attack him and his crew.

Lottie Livingstone from Lismore island is trying to save her family by taking their illegal whisky to Denmark to sell so they can pay their back rent. Her father has been severely injured, and her 2 younger brothers are not a lot of help. Selling the whisky is her last hope.

Aulay is beyond angry when he is knocked out and tied up in his cabin. Lottie’s men are unable to handle a large ship so some of his men are sailing the ship. She promises she’ll pay them when the whisky is sold. Docking in Denmark, Lottie and Aulay go to find the supposed buyer only to find a den of thieves. They make it back to the ship and head back to Scotland as they don’t have enough supplies to last them all the way to Amsterdam. Lottie’s father has died and must be buried at sea.

The crew think a ship is following them but can’t see it at first. Trying to outrun the ship trailing them in the fog, his ship sunk but they made it to shore. Aulay lost everything and will now have to repay the man whose cargo he carried. He decides they will walk over the hills to Balhaire, his family home.

There is so much more happening in this book, but if I told, it would make this a very long review and I do not want to spoil this wonderful book for anyone who reads this. Julia London is a wonderful author, and this is a book I can highly recommend.

Another unique story line in this series as we find Auley shanghai'd by a clan of misfits - I loved the characters, Auley who is one of my favorite characters deserved a romance after what his character had been through in Rabbie's story - Dru's character I really liked in this novel, too, it shows how valuable the people with learning disabilities really are and how much love that they have to give - so much adventure in this story of pirates, unscrupulous salesmen, and the sinking of two ships
