The Mortal Word (The Invisible Library Novel Book 5) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 4,234 ratings

In the latest novel in Genevieve Cogman's historical fantasy series, the fate of worlds lies in the balance. When a dragon is murdered at a peace conference, time-travelling Librarian spy Irene must solve the case to keep the balance between order, chaos...and the Library.

When Irene returns to London after a relatively straightforward book theft in Germany, Bradamant informs her that there is a top secret dragon-Fae peace conference in progress that the Library is mediating, and that the second-in-command dragon has been stabbed to death. Tasked with solving the case, Vale and Irene immediately go to 1890s Paris to start their investigation.

Once they arrive, they find evidence suggesting that the murder victim might have uncovered proof of treachery by one or more Librarians. But to ensure the peace of the conference, some Librarians are being held as hostages in the dragon and Fae courts. To save the captives, including her parents, Irene must get to the bottom of this murder--but was it a dragon, a Fae, or even a Librarian who committed the crime?

Review

Praise for The Mortal Word:

“Yet another delightful romp in the style to which her readers have grown accustomed… It’s tense, explosive, full of witty dialogue, and at times laugh-out-loud funny. Chaotic drama and deeply felt emotion combine in ever-increasing stakes, culminating in a tense and revealing standoff."—Locus

“Cogman ably combines sleuthing with politics, magic, and a bit of romance for a satisfying tale.”—
Publishers Weekly

“Genevieve Cogman’s prose in
The Mortal Word is characteristically light and witty, and filled with the kind of unexpected literary references one would expect from a book about magical librarians. Even more impressive, however, is Cogman’s ability to craft compelling standalone novels, while still using the developing relationships among her characters to tie the entire Invisible Library series together.”—Bookpage

Praise for the Invisible Library Novels

“Clever dialogue, time hopping through fun locales, plenty of action, and hints of fresh plotting will have readers looking forward to further Library missions.”—
Library Journal

“A dazzling bibliophilic debut.”—Charles Stross, Hugo Award–winning author of the Laundry Files

“Clever, creepy, elaborate world building and snarky, sexy-smart characters!”—N. K. Jemisin, author of
The Fifth Season

“A book in which to wallow.”—
The Guardian (UK)

“Witty fantasy...a thrilling and deliciously atmospheric adventure.”—
Locus

“Ms. Cogman has opened a new pathway into our vast heritage of imagined wonderlands. And yet, as her story reminds us, we yearn for still more.”—
The Wall Street Journal

“Funny, exciting, and oh-so-inspiring, this is the kind of fantasy novel that will have female readers everywhere gearing up for their own adventure.”—Bustle

I have read the preceding books in this series and am now reading the current one, which picks up the characters and their story.

I wanted to describe the central plot of the Hidden Library series for those who are new to it, so if you want to go in without knowing anything, stop here.

It’s a multiple-parallel-world fantasy in which our universe contains untold myriads of worlds, many of them inhabited with humans in some alternate version of history, with only a few beings aware of the multiplicity or able to travel between worlds. All worlds have some level of order and some level of chaos, some at one extreme or the other. At the extremes are the forces of Order, the powerful dragons, who can change into human form and have little tolerance for flights of fancy, or even imagination for that matter, and, at the other end, Chaos, ruled by the magical Fae. They are creatures of whimsy and are always deep in role play, the more powerful of them able to entrap humans into their playacting so that it becomes real. Needless to say, the Fae and the Dragons don’t get along well.

At the center is the balance maintained by the Library and its highly trained Librarians, based in an interconnected web of “all the fiction books there are anywhere.” Librarians have technology and also their own form of magic and the ability to traverse worlds using gateways from their huge and timeless Library into local libraries on the individual worlds. They go around stealing rare books from the various worlds and trying to quietly keep the peace and the balance between the extremes. It’s an appealing concept if you are especially fond of libraries and librarians as I am. Here we have heroic Librarians saving the universe from either blowing up with chaos or freezing into rigid order. Another plus: a kick-ass central heroine.

If this series interests you, be sure to start with the very first one and work your way through. Jumping into the latest installment would be totally confusing, as it is assumed that you already know many of the characters and their backstories and you would miss a lot of fun.

I found Cogman's Library series very enjoyable, and read all of them. They will appeal to the lively book nerd- a love of books and libraries, with daring-do and adventure admixed, with vivid action and intelligence, good character depiction, and a surer authorial touch than many new reads I come across. It is not of the caliber of The Great Classics, but very much worth reading for all of that.

In Genevieve Cogman’s fifth Invisible Library novel, Irene receives orders to attend the (extremely unlikely) peace talks that are about to begin between the forces of order and chaos in the universe. Between the dragons, beings of Order, and the Chaotic Fae, are Senior Librarians from the Invisible Library, whose role it is to try to maintain the peace while the talks play out, while remaining absolutely neutral between the two sides.

Irene, our protagonist, is a relatively junior Librarian, albeit one who has demonstrated a good deal of ability to think on her feet. It’s that ability, plus her experiences over the past few years (and four books!), that have caused the Senior Librarians to call her— there has been a disaster at the peace talks. One of the dragons has been murdered.

If Irene cannot discover the killer, the talks will fail, perhaps resulting in a war that will imperil the lives of the many humans living on all the worlds lying between those of the FAE and the dragons. She’ll have help, with Kai, a dragon prince who formally was her apprentice, and Vale, human, and the best private consulting detective on his world (and modeled closely on Sherlock Holmes).

As a continuation of the series, it’s definitely worth the read, although much of it would be lost on someone trying to read this book first. It’s not without flaws, including one major one. The author continually makes third person subject/object errors, mistakenly using her for him is sentences. I noticed this in the previous books as well, but for some reason it seemed worse in this book. [Also, there are no polar bears in Antarctica!]

Recommended.

This was a brilliant piece of prose!

Genevieve Cogman does world building like few others can, and her plots, with their layer upon layer of complexity, makes each page read a new discovery.

I thoroughly enjoyed every minute while reading this book, and love how much Irene Winters is growing in her Role as Librarian-in-Residence - and as a Librarian who is determined to have the truth bared, and those planning to scupper the Peace Treaty between Dragon, Fae, & the Library, brought to heel, no matter WHO it is!

There were many surprises as I read through this book and, between the plotting, the sculduggery, and the sheer force of character, of each of the players in this drama, I was kept guessing until the very end.

A wonderful story, with many thoughts and ideas that got me to thinking about my own habitual habits, and thought processes! Lol

I'm not wasting a moment longer, so am going straight on to Book Six of this wonderful series: The Secret Chapter.

So, I'll catch you on the flip side, and will let you know what I think of this next book in line!

The Mortal Word ist durchweg spannend geschrieben.
