Eva dodges the fans, media, and gossip that follow her supermodel mom and rock star family members by wearing disguises. After an aimless gap year, she struggles to figure out what she wants from life. She moves in with her famous guitar god brother in Austin while he recovers from a drunken stage stunt accident and tries to stay sober. When a hot Texas cowboy named Alex takes Eva by surprise, she risks her safety and security of anonymity by letting him into her unconventional life.

Alex is captivated by Eva and promises to protect her privacy. Yet he has a secret of his own—the fling he had with an older woman is fraught with scandalous potential for him and now Eva. He broke free of that mistake months ago, or so he thought. As things heat up with Eva, his old flame returns and won’t leave him alone.

Just when Alex thinks he has the reins on the situation, his ex teams up with a gossip reporter hell-bent on invading Eva’s privacy. The resulting exposé, with a sly spin on a recent encounter with his ex, is Alex’s worst nightmare, and Eva’s unsure what to believe. Can she face the world with Alex at her side or will she return into hiding?

What a lovely tale of growth and love. It's a coming-of-age romance with emotion and grit. I was impressed by the story, characters, and message.

Romances have a formula. The author did a wonderful job honoring the trope. There was wooing, steam, romance, heartbreak, and HEA. It was all done in a charming modern college genre with a dash of rock star urban cowboy.

Eva and Alex are likable characters surrounded by an ensemble of fun supporting players. Their relationships are complex and believable. They warm you and ignite your care of them. Some, your hate. LOL

There was a lot involved in this plot, but it was well-paced and welcoming. It was sweet even when intense and just a pleasure to read. Definitely recommend for audiences 18+.

Eva is the daughter of a supermodel. She was kidnapped as a young child, and because of that, she’s grown up in disguise. She’s told that it’s for her own good, that her mother wants to protect her. Now she’s in Austin, caring for her rock star brother Lor, who is recovering from an accident that left him unable to perform with his band. Can she start fresh here, where no one knows her?
Alex is a young man on the verge of being grown and flown. He’s a cowboy, a student at the University of Texas, working to keep up his grades and hold down a job. But he’s haunted by his fling with a much older woman, and now he faces the possibility that it’s all going to come to light.

The two meet when Lor orders a delivery that is definitely not in his rehab plan, and sparks fly almost immediately. Both are hesitant to pursue a relationship because of their respective secrets, though. They dance around it for a while, but are soon unable to resist each other. On top of all the new relationship turmoil, they’re each keeping the other at arm’s length. But as so often happens, life conspires to bring secrets to light.

This was really a fun read! Eva and Alex are both likable characters. Most of the characters are. The only ones I really didn’t like were Eva’s mom Sloane Silver (and I could understand to some extent why she was the way she was – I don’t like it, but I understand it) and Alex’s ill-advised fling Angie (she was just hateful and predatory toward Alex – she wanted him back and didn’t much care who she had to stomp on to try to make that happen). Did I want to shake Eva and Alex at times when they were holding back from being open and honest with each other? Yes. Yes, I did. But I was young and foolish once, too. Their reticence was based on fear – fear of rejection, fear of showing their true selves. And I suspect we’ve all felt that way at some point in a relationship.

I really appreciated that Preece wrote such a good relationship between Eva and Alex’s sister Lena. Lena has Down syndrome, and it would have been easy to make Eva hesitant or stand-offish around her. But she jumps right in and treats Lena just like she would anyone else, with kindness and dignity. Their interactions were a particularly bright spot in the story!

I also love that Eva isn’t pretention. Tiny houses are a fascination of mine, and I’d love to read more of the story in the future. Does Eva ever build her tiny house? Do she and Alex go traveling with it? What happens?! I want to know!

The story had a bit more on-page spice than I usually prefer in my romance reads. I wasn’t really expecting that. I mention it for those of you who, like me, may prefer the zestier action to take place off the page.

Spice notwithstanding, Preece does a good job of weaving a lot of different elements together to create a fast-paced, engaging story with main characters you’ll cheer for. Four shiny stars from me for Whiskey on Our Shoes!

Tonya Preece uses Austin and Florence, Texas for Eva and Alex to share a story of family missteps and assumed expectations. These two young adults’ paths cross serendipitously. They learn secrets are not sacred as Texans often hold gossip dearer than children and forgiveness at arm’s length.

The endearing characters are developed with fascinating personalities and relatable perspectives because of their experiences. Eva has lived anonymously since birth, hidden behind a world of famous parents and their secrets. She doesn’t know all the enigmas but was brought up to hide from the world, remaining anonymous. What are the choices when your mom’s a supermodel and your father’s a famous rock band star? She’s had a sheltered life while her parents splurged on enough drugs and alcohol to turn three-dimensional realities upside down. Alex is a student who wants to make his hard-working parents proud. He hides his affair with an older woman; however, when he learns her history, Alex leaves her behind to refocus on his studies. Family means everything to him.

Ms. Preece takes fans of young adult contemporary romance on a fun, fast-paced journey of honesty in relationships. She peels away the layers of the people to expose their innermost thoughts, secrets, and feelings to one another. Readers are beside Eva and Alex every unexpected step of the way, hoping the right choices are made. I highly recommend this easy-to-devour story full of exciting twists and turns.

Tonya Preece’s novel, Whiskey On Our Shoes, is an upbeat, fast-tempo novel that explores the different relationships people have with the truth. Eva’s truth is wrapped up in her identity, as the daughter of a famous model and sister of a rockstar. Alex’s truth is tied into an act from his past (something he, as a college sophomore, is barely old enough to have). The greater truth, once the two meet, is in how they will live their lives going forward.

Author Preece incorporates music into all her work, and in this case, she’s given us Lor (short for DeLorean) – Eva’s rockstar brother – as an obvious insertion. Lor is essentially the third lead character in this story, as he is both catalyst to Eva and Alex’s relationship and serves as a chorus to both young people as the story goes on. As well, the author’s use of dialogue felt a lot like improvisational riffing between the characters, the way all good conversations do. I really enjoyed the way the rhythms of each character’s speech wove in and out of the greater whole. It’s this, as much as the story, that made the novel for me.

The story itself was well-written, and felt like it could easily be a television show (multicamera, no laugh track) with organic moments of humor that helped to break the mood when tension got too high. Even though some of the situations felt a bit heightened, Preece kept everything grounded in emotional truth. As well, the three core characters were genuinely likable despite their flaws.

Overall, Whiskey On Our Shoes is a fast read, fresh enough for the new adult market, but suitable for adult readers also.

Goes well with: Asian stir fry and iced green tea.
