Julie’s Recommendations:
Here are my recommended YA Dystopia books/series.
- The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins (Because this is the series every other dystopia books get compared to.)
- Birthmarked by Caragh O’Brien (Because it is a “smart” series and I really liked the worlds and issues brought up in the various books.)
- Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi (Because you just don’t find writing like that very often.)
- Divergent series by Veronica Roth (Because even though the third book made everyone angry, it is still an interesting series.)
- Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card (Because epic, and the main character starts out at the age of 6 and has to make such difficult decisions.)
- Stitch series by Samantha Durante (Because things are definitely not always as they seem.)
- City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau (Because how would you like to live underground when all your supplies seem to be running out?)
- The Giver by Lois Lowry (Because it is a book I wish I read at a younger age.)
- The Testing by Joelle Charbonneau (Because I would never want to have to take a test like this.)
- The Program by Suzanne Young (Because teen suicide is not a tough enough topic, we have to make a dystopian society around it.)
- Uninvited duology by Sophie Jordan (Because even though the author considers it more sci-fi than dystopian, it has some really cool elements and gives you something to think about – what if you had the kill gene, does that automatically make you a killer if you haven’t done anything yet?)
- Unwind dystology by Neal Shusterman (Because it is seriously the most disturbing idea I’ve read yet.)
