We recently had Indie Bookstore Day so let’s chat about our favorite Indie Bookstores!
Julie:
We are lucky in that Houston is rich in Indie bookstores. I have visited (and wanted to hug) a few of them, and yet I know there are still more I haven’t been to. What I love about these Indie bookstores are all the author events they host!
Murder by the Book does events ALL. THE. TIME! I have met so many wonderful authors there!
Katy Budget Books was a favorite of mine when I lived closer to it. It, too, has great author events and has a sale twice a year where books are like pennies and you can come home with way too many used books to add to your shelves.
I’ve also been to a few events at Blue Willow Bookshop. Blue Willow is also the main bookseller at the Houston Teen Book Con!
I have to edit this because I can’t believe I forgot to talk about Powell’s! It is a HUGE indie bookstore in Portland, that Rose and I got to visit a couple of years back. It spans a city block and is several stories tall. It was beautiful.
Lynn:
What Julie says. Seriously.
I love all three of the book stores mentioned above. Author events. Super-mega used book sales. Helpful, pleasant, staff. If I’m buying physical copies of books, it’s at one of these stores.

The best bookstore near me (well, about an hour away, but still …) is Anderson’s Bookshop. They have TONS of author events. I love it!!

I love indie bookstores as well, Julie, and I’m very lucky to have one in my town…which is amazing considering there’s only about 10000 people here. But, living close to Denver, I also make sure to visit Tattered Cover Bookstore which has been around for 45 years. It’s great and has 3 locations. They have great author events as well. I got to meet Kim Harrison and Maggie Stiefvater there! *squee* I love Powell’s as well and am excited that my daughter is going to college in Portland. I’ll get to visit Powell’s on a more regular basis. LOL

Ooh, I should mention Elliot Bay Bookstore in Seattle as well…although I preferred the location they were in about 10 years ago, I visited them in their new location last October. Still great!

Thanks, Brandee! Those sound like great book stores!
I know of at least two indie bookstores near me and they do host lots of events.
My favorite indie bookstore is Bakka Phoenix Books in Toronto. It only sells science fiction and fantasy novels. It was amazing and I could have spent hours there combing the shelves!
