For this discussion post, we joining the Tell Me Something Tuesday challenge run by Jen at That’s What I’m Talking About. Here’s the topic for this week. What are some of your favorite indie/small pub authors/books?
Julie:
We previously talked about Indie Bookstores, (and it even has it’s own day) so let’s talk about authors and books!
I do admit my involvement with books and the indie world has dwindled since I had a kid, and even more so after we moved away from Houston. I used to go to so many fun indie author events.
When we first started this book blog, and first met the author, she was rocking the Indie author life. I mean the Colleen Hoover herself. Now she’s such a big name, and definitely earned her fame! She is definitely a favorite!
But I haven’t been tracking any recently and only read books as part of tours very rarely, and mostly audiobooks of my choice.
So I’ll leave you with these lists so you can find your own next favorite indie author or book.
Lynn:
I think most of the indie authors\publishers I’ve been exposed to have been on blog tours. I’m sure it’s difficult to be an independent author and get noticed, but at least those blog tours help!
Let’s list out some tour books I’ve really enjoyed. Check out my reviews and then check out the books!
- The Halo Trilogy by McPhall and Hays. Some of the best sci fi I’ve read in awhile. Mars. An all seeing AI. And mushrooms made into building materials.
- If you are looking for Historical Western Romance, you can’t go wrong with Linda Broday or Jodi Thomas.
- I am STILL thinking about\freaking out about House of the Rising Sun by Richard Cox. 2 years later.
- In the non-tour category, I loved the Traveler series by Dennis Green. Multi-verse central!
Ok – I see a pattern here. LOTS of Sci Fi \ Dystopia on my fav list!
What are your thoughts on indie authors? Any favs we should check out?
We are also linking up our discussion posts with the 2023 Book Blog Discussion Challenge hosted by Nicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction and Shannon @ It Starts at Midnight!
To this day, one of the most memorable author events I’ve ever been to was CoHo’s MAYBE SOMEDAY tour. Not only did it include the singer/songwriter who wrote the music that goes with the book, but I happened to be at an event where Colleen’s whole family attended, and that made it even more special

I confessed on TTT that I rarely read Indie books and rarely go to author events any more. I want to support beginning authors but the new books by established authors are louder at getting my attention.

Same, so rarely it happens anymore cause real life and all.
Valid, Anne. Those established authors and publishers do get much more attention.
Oh, thanks for the recommendations. I haven’t heard of several of those authors.
I remember when I started blogging (2010), authors were just starting to self-publish and those authors were looked down upon by organizations like RWA and such. It’s so crazy how far things have come since then.
It’s great indie is becoming more accepted and they can be really fun without all the rules from big publishing houses.
welcome, Jen!
