If you thought death was the end...you’d be dead wrong.
Life was barely manageable after my mom was murdered three years ago. I wasn’t sure what my purpose was anymore. But then on my twenty-first birthday, I drank a little too much and fell from the roof of my nine-story apartment building.
I died. Then... I un-died.
Enter Hayden, my really bossy (and hot) guardian angel whose duty is to train me to be the next “Soldier of Light.”
Sound fun? Well, it’s not. I save dead people, helping them move on to the World of Light. And to make matters even worse, they are all troubled souls stuck in the Dark Realm with the devil and his army of demonic creatures. They roam my city’s streets at night, waiting for me to screw up.
The Afterlife is one of Death’s best kept secrets, and I’m living proof. I’m pretty sure I’m the wrong person for this job, despite what Hayden thinks. Guess I’m stuck saving the dead.

Julie Review Avatar Julie’s Review:

What happens in the afterlife? Negative Zero explores those fun topics of Angels – Guardian Angels specifically – and what their role is on the Earth.

We get introduced to our main character right around the time she um dies. Oops. But we know that’s not the end for Evika, as she awakens anew, alive, and confused. Now she has a Guardian Angel (who she’s really had her whole life, but finally can know about). Now she is aware of this whole new world she didn’t know about and keeps finding out more surprises from her family history of both deceased parents.

Oh, and um, her new job. Yes, she apparently now is a Soldier of Light, and her new job is to help lost souls cross over to the light.

The world-building is fun, and I enjoyed this take on Heaven and Hell in a more mythological way. These Seeker souls she is to help have been stuck in the darkness (Hell) and have this chance to cross over to the Light – with an Angel’s help. So that’s Evika’s destiny – and you can’t argue with destiny, right?

Well, Evika is young. I mean, she’s 21, just barely an adult, grieving over the loss of her mother from a few years ago, and her priorities are not on straight. Yes, her Guardian Angel, Hayden, is hoTT, but come on girl see the bigger picture here. There is so much going on! Quit drinking and get your head on right.

Here are my complaints or at least what I did like – Negative Zero is written in a more YA-style fantasy trope, where the main character suddenly finds out she’s something different or special, spends most of the book moping or fawning over a dude.

When I requested to read/listen to this title, I was intrigued by the “helping souls cross over” aspect.  But in this first book, we are just getting introduced to that concept, in horrific ways. I won’t go into that too much for spoilers but let me just stick some trigger warning labels on this book right now.

The story ends with the first soul being helped and I definitely want to read the next book because I want to see more about these souls, about Evika coping with the burden of this duty.

I listened to the audio narration, and really enjoyed the narrator. Great pacing and voice tone for our main character and supporting characters. Very pleasant and definitely a voice I could binge-listen to.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
