As a voracious reader, it’s guaranteed that you have special spots for reading. Maybe it’s a favorite chair, or you prefer the comfort of your soft pillow. That being said, it might be time to carve out one specific spot to create a reading nook. You could certainly look to DIY decor books for help, but what better way to create a reading nook than centering it around books?
If you’d like to create a reading nook for yourself, take inspiration from something—or someone—specific. As an avid reader, you likely have a favorite author. Try to take the themes and settings that come up in their work, and bring it into your own space. For example, Hemingway has a nautical, minimalist style that you could incorporate into your nook as decor.
If you don’t want to model your space after a specific author, you might want to try modeling it after a genre. The fantasy genre contains many components that might be inspirational or useful when creating a space. Many fantasy stories begin in a small, mysterious space (Harry Potter, Narnia, Coraline, etc.) and that might be a good place to start. You also could try adding string lights—or “fairy” lights—to make the space more mystical. Lastly, there are often magical rituals in fantasy books, so you could add candles or potpourri (bonus: this addition could also make the space smell great).
It’s possible that you don’t need a reading nook for yourself, and you’re trying to make reading more appealing for your kids. Hear us out: a Dr. Seuss-inspired nook. The illustrations and ideas in Dr. Seuss are childish (and a bit over-the-top) so bring in lots of colors. The idea here is to create a fun, playful environment for your children to read in (unless you like it, too). Happy reading!
