Tate Aaralyn is both prey and predator—a duality that defines her. Beyond the veil that separates worlds, lies the the home of vampires. There, she is prey—fragile, weak, her flaws laid bare. She is a vampire who struggles with the ethics of feeding. And yet, in the human realm she is the executioner of justice.
But when Tate is sent to a disciplinary hearing that results in forced enlistment to the gaura, her worst nightmare is made real. In desperation to make a lasting difference, Tate faces her biggest challenge yet—Aether, a vampire unlike any other.
As lines blur, she must navigate the labyrinth of lies and embrace her newfound power, all while questioning her mysterious bond to the male who has managed to capture her heart and, somehow, earn her trust.
Chance Dale may be the president’s son, but even with his birthright he is, by all accounts, a disappointment. After witnessing evil evolving and the violation of life as he knows it, Chance must find a way to defeat the dark magic before it spreads. The world of politics becomes nuanced, and he is forced to question the very statutes that have guided his life or watch everything he’s worked for burn.
Chance’s quest to secure the Glenn from foreign powers has his path crossing with Tate’s—his former lover and deepest regret. As the truth unravels, he must choose between the love he once had or the one he could have. Worse yet, that very love could soon become the enemy he hunts.

QOTD: Do you prefer vampires with a moral code, or fully unhinged immortals?

Julie’s Review:

Fangs of Fate (Untish Series Book 1) is a dark fantasy full of dark magic, dangerous alliances, a fierce FMC, vampires and dragons, desire and yearning, and a lot of epic battles. The audiobook is fabulous – I do love a full cast and we have all the main characters with their own amazing voice actors. This audio production is very well done. I especially love the voice acting for our FMC.

This book is dark and violent, not holding back with the trauma that shapes our FMC into the baddie she is. Tate is a vampire who prefers to feed as a vigilante, hunting down bad humans who have hurt others in the worst ways. I absolutely loved this about her, take that bad men. But her vampire society has a no kill rule and when she gets sloppy, she gets forced into the vampire guard. When she tries to run away, she stumbles upon a secret tribe that was supposed to be a myth, and starts to discover so many secrets about herself and her abilities. No matter what comes at her, she fights and remains strong. I really enjoyed her character and want to see more of what is to come.

The book is told in alternating POVs, with the second POV being that of her ex, Chase. He’s the former lover (high ranking guard and son of the vampire President) who “distracted” her while her mother was being secretly interrogated, and executed by said President. This is something Tate has never forgiven Chase for, and his biggest regret. He’s still hung up on her, and she wants nothing to do with him. Obviously. I mean, who would? Now with this being the other POV I thought the enemies to lovers was going to be them finding their way back to each other. Otherwise, the stories have been parallel but separate and Chase’s scenes weren’t as fun for me as Tate’s. I didn’t understand why he took up so much of the story. He is investigating some strange occurrences with his newly assigned partner-with-benefits, and eventually his path crosses Tate’s. While he struggles with uncovering truths about their enemies, he finds Tate has secrets of her own now. Obviously as the dutiful son he believes his father is doing the right thing, but that starts to crack a bit. Does he get a redemption arc later? I didn’t care for him at all.

And enter Aether, undercover in the vampire guard and definitely something different. Is this the enemies to lovers situation? It certainly is slow burn. He starts out not wanting to trust this new recruit who hasn’t even fully come into her own abilities yet, and yet he is absolutely drawn to her. The hot/cold desire was delicious but started getting old after a while, and the lack of communication and explaining to Tate what is happening was getting on my nerves. And yet he helps her and protects her every step of the way, even funneling her magic when she starts to lose control. There’s definitely more to this story and unfortunately it was *just* getting good before the book ended. Why can they communicate telepathically? Is this part of their special magic, or is there more to these two? Why are they so drawn to each other on a magical level? So I guess the slow burn enemies to lovers will continue to develop in the second book, but for the first installation it was just a taste. I would have really enjoyed Aether’s POV instead of Chase’s.

The magic was really interesting but so much was happening at once, and like our FMC, we still don’t fully understand the magic and this secret tribe. I guess the world building will continue in future books of the series, but it left a lot of questions and uncomfortable confusion. So I will say the ending was almost just the beginning of expanding on this story. I guess I’ll need to find my way to the next book if I want any answers. I hope there’s another audiobook because that made this worth reading for sure. I don’t know if I would have enjoyed it as much if it was just words on paper.
