We’re starting a new feature here on Chapter Break called Chat About Covers. ‘Cause you know we all judge books by covers, whether we admit it or not. We judge the style, the color and font choices, and just the overall look. That might not keep us from reading the book, but we do still judge.
Yep this cover got me. The book was free that day so of course I bought it. I mean wow look at that cover! And mermaids!
This style, it gets me every time. I love the blues and purples. I love the dark with bright.
The font – really liking it. Though I gotta say it’s busy. The thorny stuff behind the title is making it busy, too much on the eyes when I focus on that area.
But I really like the sea in the background, kind of subtle but there. And bubbles!
I like the girl with the red hair – all mermaids are Ariel right? And she has a tiara!
The thorny looking things I could do without, but because they add to the busy-ness of the cover and make it too much. Maybe they are meaningful to the story though.
Either way because of this cover (and the lack of money required for purchase that day) this book is now on my TBR.
My gut reaction is the raised eyebrow. I’m not a fan.
Let’s start with the people. To me, they look very airbrushed, which I guess is a style? Just not one I’m a fan of. Plus, I’m supposed to believe that both characters are ‘young adult’ when they look closer to 30 than 20?
To follow Julie’s Ariel theme, maybe he’s a shipwrecked sailor, like Eric? And I’m guessing that’s a modern watch on his wrist? Hopefully, one that works at depths\under water.
The cover is too busy for me as well. I like the colors of the background. But everything else feels like extra noise that’s not needed.
I like the placement and font of the title. The thorns (antler? crown?) behind the title blend well.
Overall, I’d pass. Mermaids aren’t really my thing.
What are your thoughts on this cover?
Ooooh I am glad that Lynn said it is supposed to be YA because yeah that guy looks older than me tbh. I agree with Julie that the colors are fabulous (especially considering the genre!) but I have to agree with Lynn about the airbrushed people. So yeah, I am going to side with Lynn on this one and give it a hard pass, mostly because of Sugar Daddy Eric creeping me out ?
