Here at Chapter Break, we don’t always write a full review of every book we read. Well, now we decided to do these monthly wrap-up posts with roundups of our reviews this month and mini-reviews to fill in the gaps. Enjoy!

Flip-Flops and Murder: Barefoot Sleuth Mysteries, Book 1: This was a cute beach read. Light and breezy, definitely a cozy mystery and not a heavy thriller. Enjoyable lazy read from the beach and my couch.

Marriage And Murder: I liked this ok. The murder sleuthing was more interesting to me than the romance. And Cletus was so out of it with worry over Jenn that he only had one funny line in the book – two drumsticks shy of a picnic basket. Though I will say this did clarify some plot points that I felt were missing in Dr. Strange Beard.

Kiss of Deception: I was meh for 3/4 of the book, but the end grabbed my attention. The fact that Lea runs away from an arranged marriage to only have two boys fawn over her. WHICH boy will she choose. Oh yeah. I don’t care. I’d rather she focus on her own growth – which was a much more intriguing plotline. I might actually be interested enough to read the next one. Full cast audio recording was well done. Except one of the narrators also narrators AIDAN in the Illuminae Files. Which made for some strange visuals, to say the least.

Godsgrave: Here we have another example of Jay Kristoff feeding off the tears and anguish of his readers! He builds amazing characters and then just POOF kills them off! It’s interesting to see the lengths to which Mia will go for her revenge. Honestly, I don’t know that I’d have those same convictions. Where I read Nevernight, I listened to Godsgrave. I don’t think I’d call this ‘enjoyable’. More like stressful and riveting. And lots of driveway moments, finishing up a scene before getting out of the car. But honestly, I found the choice of a male narrator for a very female-forward cast unusual. Don’t get me wrong. I thought the narrator did a good job with the male voices and as a ‘narrator’. But I struggled with the female voices being not particularly feminine or distinct. And there is A LOT of whispering amongst the characters. I had the volume turned up to 11 and still had to struggle to hear what was being said. I think it will be back to reading for Darkdawn. 12 for the book. and 3 for the narration.
