Guest Review:
One of the things I’ve grown to appreciate about the Ellie the Chick series is how it manages to wrap life’s simple joys into stories that toddlers can both enjoy and relate to. In Ellie, Just A Little Eggstra: A Special Day for The Easter Chick, Ellie takes us through a heartwarming Easter celebration that beautifully captures the spirit of the holiday.
While I review children’s books, I always focus on the storyline (what my toddlers can learn from the book), wordings, and illustrations, as I think they’re three key components that can greatly influence a child’s reading experience.
What stood out to me in this book wasn’t just the excitement of the Easter parade or the surprise hot air balloon ride (though my child was definitely wide-eyed during that part!). It was how the story introduced the idea of shared celebration.
I also liked how the book gently introduces the concept of community. From attending church to watching the parade with others, there’s an understated but important message about being part of something bigger than yourself. For toddlers just starting to understand social gatherings and celebrations, it’s a great primer for how holidays bring people together.
This subtle message really resonated with me as a parent. Holidays can often feel overwhelming with all the decorations, events, and things to buy, but this book reminds us that the magic comes from shared moments. Whether it’s dressing up for church, waving to neighbors at a parade, or simply holding hands during a hot air balloon ride, the joy is in being together.
The wording in this book is gentle and sweet. Simple enough for a toddler to understand, but not too repetitive. There’s a natural flow to the way Ellie moves from one scene to the next, making it easy to follow while keeping little readers engaged. And as usual, Ellie’s chirpy personality brings a nice dose of warmth and enthusiasm to every page.
Illustration-wise, this book continues the series’ tradition of bright, cheerful artwork. The colors feel especially fitting for Easter (pastels, blossoms, sunshine), and there’s a nice balance between cozy indoor scenes and big festive outdoor moments. The characters’ expressions are always vivid and relatable, which helps my child connect with what’s happening in the story.
Ellie’s journey has been a fun one to follow. This book, specifically, gently reminds us that being “a little eggstra” is something to be proud of. When you’re looking for a lighthearted, easy read but still feel-good book to read for your toddler, I think this episode in the series is worth reading!
