Interview with Michelle Madow

Author Interview: Michelle Madow

What do you do when a new idea jumps out at you while you’re still working on a book? Do you chase the squirrel (aka “UP syndrome”) or do you finish your current project first?

I naturally love finishing projects I start, so I’m very focused on completing a book before starting another one. To stop myself from getting sidetracked, I have an “idea folder” in my computer. I’ll jot down notes for new ideas so I don’t forget about them, and save them there for later use. Then I’ll return to the project I’m working on. If I don’t finish a project, I won’t have a completed novel, and just knowing that keeps me on track!

Do you identify with your main character or did you create a character that is your opposite?

There are four main characters in The Secret Diamond Sisters — Savannah, Courtney, Peyton, and Madison. I’m by far the most like Courtney. (The most down to Earth and goal-driven sister.) Although I also have aspects of the other girls in me, like Savannah’s optimism, Peyton’s dislike of following arbitrary rules, and Madison’s confidence. The character most opposite of me is Peyton. She’s holding onto a lot of anger, and she has trouble forgiving people, which is extremely different from my personality! Savannah is the most like I was at her age (fifteen), and Courtney is most similar to who I am today.

Do you have any odd (writing) habits?

I can’t work at a desk — I find it extremely uncomfortable and stifling! (When I was in school I never did homework at a desk, either.) I like to write while reclining on my bed, or on a couch or comfy armchair. I also have trouble listening to music while I write. It distracts me, so I unfortunately need to write in silence. (It’s unfortunate because I love music!)

Suddenly the Strip’s most exclusive clubs are all-access, and with an unlimited credit card each, it should be easier than ever to fit right in. But in a town full of secrets and illusion, fitting in is nothing compared to finding out the truth about their past.
