Perhaps your young child has just announced that their favorite stuffed dragon can breathe fire from its mouth. Or, do they claim the crayon mural on their bedroom wall was done by the family pet?

Maybe they claim the mud that got tracked through the freshly cleaned kitchen was put there by … anyone or anything other than them!  It might have come from outer space.

There is lots of research about why, how and when kids lie, but parents will agree that it does create a challenging and frustrating situation.  You want it to be a teachable moment.  However, it’s tricky to strike the right tone, keep things positive and feel that you’re getting through to your child.  It’s hard to teach honesty without sounding like the local sheriff!

In Meet the Mermaids: Hi, I’m Sofia, you and your child get to know Sofia, the member of the Five Enchanted Mermaids who loves to help kids learn about the joys and benefits of being honest.  Let Sofia be your child’s guide as she gently talks through the reasons why kids lie and then presents some vignettes to illustrate the different reasons.  In each mini-story there are “happy” and “unhappy” outcomes, which map out the range of consequences that could confront a child when presented with the choices to either fess up or deflect blame away from themselves. These alternate scenarios can be used as conversation starters between you and your child.

This mermaid book is a great addition to your home, classroom and school library and makes a lovely daughter, granddaughter or niece mermaid gift.

Meet the Mermaids: Hi, I’m Sofia is the sixth book in a series of picture books for children age 3 to 7.  The series is a great reference for your child to learn about elements of early childhood development in a friendly, creative and non-threatening setting. If you’re looking for unique stories that help your child develop emotional intelligence and a growth mindset, these books are for you!

The lovely multicultural book we got to read for this event was Meet the Mermaids: Hi, I’m Sofia.

The illustrations in this book are lovely! I love how mermaid Sofia has a gorgeous red mermaid tail, top, and even fan. She has lovely flowing brown hair with a flower. While not specified, I imagine this mermaid has influence from the country of Spain. When we look at all the 5 enchanted mermaids together, we can see each mermaid represents a different culture, which is fun to see. They’re all sisters, but they’re diverse as well.

The book goes on to introduce how helpful the mermaids are. They love to help kids and teach them valuable lessons. Sofia’s book is about honesty. Sofia and her dolphin friend make up stories about kids on the shore. My son and I enjoyed reading this and talking about some of the choices made by the kids and sea life in the examples they created. Sofia showed us how exaggeration or boasting is not nice, and how if we tell the truth the result is a much happier ending.

The book is part of a series about the Enchanted Mermaids so check them out!
