Book Summary

A serial killer hides behind an untouchable global institution. A broken system fails the victims. One woman vows to uncover the truth.

When young women are found dead in the capital of the Central African Republic, United Nations official Stella Fairmont is reminded of the unsolved disappearance of a friend. As she investigates, she uncovers what may be a chilling pattern: similar deaths in another UN location.

The deeper she digs, the more twisted the view becomes and Stella finds herself up against a system built on compromise, in which accountability is often an illusion. When the truth gets blurred and personal histories can be hidden, the only way to survive is to trust her instincts. But as friendships run thin and time runs out, she must navigate a minefield of lies, moral complexity, and buried secrets — all while trying to stay ahead of someone who would kill to keep the truth hidden.

Guest Post: Books Every Thriller Lover Should Read

By Liz Wanic

Here are some of my favorite thrillers across a variety of sub-genres and in no particular order:

I Am Pilgrim – Terry Hayes

I loved how Hayes reveals different parts of the action from different perspectives and different timelines along the way. Great story, really well executed.

Killing Floor – Lee Child

Really any of the Jack Reacher books. Reacher is a fantastic character and Lee Child keeps finding new ways to build fresh, engaging stories around him.

Our Man in Havana – Graham Greene

Is it really a thriller? I’d argue yes, despite the satirical take. Also check out The Quiet American or any other Graham Greene book – he’s an excellent writer.

The Constant Gardener – John Le Carré

He’s got so many good books, it’s hard to choose one. But The Constant Gardener delivers an exciting, multi-faceted narrative, where personal drama is intertwined with international intrigue.

Hades – Candace Fox

The Archer and Bennett series is fantastic, so why not start at the beginning? Eden’s unconventional background and upbringing adds an intriguing extra layer to these exciting Australian crime thrillers.

The Name of the Rose – Umberto Eco

Historical fiction meets murder mystery. If you like Dan Brown, you’ll love how this book ups the ante on religion and ritual as a backdrop for crime. But beware before you dive in – it’s a long one!

A Time to Kill – John Grisham

Another author with too many excellent books to choose just one. He’s so good at what he does, and A Time to Kill is wonderful to watch on the screen and to explore in print.
