Author Interview

  1. Share some of your journey to publishing your children’s book.
The Unicornia series in Spain came after I had written other collections for children and young adults. The first one I published was El Club de las Zapatillas Rojas (The Red Sneakers Club), featuring adventures among friends at middle school and aimed at pre-teen readers. With Unicornia, I immersed myself fully in the magic a fantasy universe has to offer, and I am enjoying it immensely.
  1. How did you select your topic?
Unicornios have always fascinated me because of the mythology and air of secrecy surrounding them. And little girls love them! So, while talking with my publisher, we wondered… what if we created a city where absolutely every unicorn in the world lived? And as I began to picture that city—home to the most magical creature on earth—I realized it had to be filled with magic in every single corner.
  1. Did you get to pick your illustrator? How do you feel about illustrations in children’s books?
Diana Vicedo is the illustrator of Unicornia, and I am absolutely delighted to be working with her. I didn’t know her before starting the series; the publisher discovered her and suggested her to me, and I thought she was fantastic right from the start. Before Unicornia, I always worked with illustrators through the publishing house. However, with Diana, we once shared a question regarding an illustration in the early books, and since then, we have spoken frequently to build the world of Unicornia together. An illustrator’s work is crucial in children’s books because the visual aspect is the first thing to catch a child’s eye, yet this element is often overlooked.
  1. Do you have a special connection with your children’s book topic or characters?
As I mentioned earlier, unicorns have always fascinated me—and so has magic. That’s why I thoroughly enjoy creating stories that weave magic into everyday settings, like a camp in the clouds or a rainbow swimming pool. I also feel a very strong connection to the characters I create, because they always embody familiar traits—drawn from my children or my childhood friends—that give them a sense of authenticity and familiarity.
  1. What do you hope to teach or inspire in children reading your book?
With the Unicornia books, I aim to convey values that children might find useful in their daily lives—empathy, friendship, community… As the protagonists embark on an adventure, readers can identify with them and understand what they are experiencing.
  1. Describe the child that is your target reader.
My target audience is children who love magic and fantasy. They are developing readers who are beginning to read independently, having ventured into chapter books. That is why the layout features little text per page and plenty of illustrations. And, above all… they love unicorns!
  1. How do your children enjoy the book(s) you published?
When I started publishing Unicornia, I used to read the books with my children. They’ve grown up now and prefer reading other kinds of books, but they do help me create them—offering ideas and even designing characters. They are very creative and still love fantasy!
