Rose review avatar  Here is the beginning of a book I recently just started reading:

The screw through Cinder’s ankle had rusted, the engraved cross marks worn to a mangled circle. Her knuckles ached from forcing the screwdriver into the joint as she struggled to loosen the screw one gritting twist after another. By the time it was extracted far enough for her to wrench free with her prosthetic steel hand, the hairline threads had been stripped clean.

Cinder

I am reading this for my YA book club. It is not a book I would normally pick up. I am about one third of the way through and I am still not super excited to be reading this book. I can’t really pin point why, but it is just not grabbing my attention. It is a retelling of the Cinderella fairy tale. Some things that I am liking about the book is not just that Cinder is a cyborg, but that she is also a mechanic. I really like that! That aspect of the book seems well researched. I asked my mechanic boyfriend a couple of questions from things that Cinder is doing in this book and he says they are accurate. In fact, he asked me just the other day what “Cinder” was up to. I will have to read on to keep him informed!

  1. Something about this book, and its series, is really drawing me towards it! I quite like this beginning because it immediately shows you that Cinder is a cyborg but also that she can take care of herself as well! Thanks for sharing 🙂 I hope you have a great weekend!

Thanks Juli! I am hearing a lot of good things about this series, too. I am not all that exciting about this book right now, but it is unique (for a retelling) and I will see if it gets better.

Yeah, it is sort of my genre in that it is YA, and I like reading YA, but I have never read a fairy tell retelling and I have never read a book about cyborgs and aliens, so it is a bit out of my usual, which I said I wanted to read, but this book needs to get good soon… I feel like nothing has happened and am a little bored… saw you post… I just want to know where are the good looking doctors at the hospital I work at? haha

I’m normally not a fan of retellings, but I’ve been hearing really great things about Cinder. The “review” which impressed me the most came from a middle-aged father of five. I figure that if someone outside of the target demographic can like it, then it must really be good! =)

Wow! That is interesting. I am still reading and still not captivated, but not entirely bored either. We shall see how it goes. I will finish it regardless, though as it is for my book club this month.

Thanks Claudia! I am off this weekend so YAY!!!! And I plan to finish this book this weekend as well.

Cinder is the first retelling that I’ve read and actually really liked. I liked how unique it was. Hope it gets better for you 🙂

Me, too! I think I am going to try and finish it today since book club is Wednesday! EEP!

It is okay. I think the problem is that it is a plot driven book and not really character driven. And in this case, since it is a retelling of a Cinderella, I basically already know the ending. Perhaps this is the reason I do not appreciate it that much???
